It was late 2020, and a friend suggested we go sketching in the park. I grabbed a pencil and got hold of a flimsy MUJI sketchbook (no offence to them, I love you MUJI). We sat on the grass, and I picked a tree.
It must have been the longest I’d spent looking at one tree. There in the park, just me, the tree, and the page. In that transcendent moment I thought… I reckon this will solve all my problems.

That one outing really did spark something, and The First Tree has since been joined by a forest of trees. I will not share The First Tree with you, for it is shite. Which is brilliant, because it means I am learning.
After I started sharing my art on Instagram, I found Urban Sketchers London, which has been a fantastic motivator. Sketching on location with the group every single month has helped me overcome any nerves about painting in public. I’ve also met some wonderful people!
My definition of ‘urban sketching’ is very loose, and - as you can imagine - involves a lot of trees.
Thank you for reading, it is lovely to share my art journey with you. In future posts I will talk about my more silly, scribbly, comic-strip art, but for now I will leave you with a few more trees.
