Hourly Comic Day IS COMING

This fun, foolish, and open-to-all event will brighten up your winter

Every 1st Feb, thousands of creative people wake up to a ridiculous and delightful challenge: you draw a comic that illustrates every waking hour of your day.

If that sounds like a lot of work, it is! Consider this post my pitch to you, and why you should take part in such a silly challenge. There’s great joy in seeing so many people join in all over the world; you get a snapshot of daily life for just one day on Earth.

My 2022 Hourly Comic Day! (Part 1/3)

Hourly Comic Day began in 2006, and for the people who have done the challenge for several years it’s like a series of time capsules. Lucy Knisley has put all her HCDs on her website; they go back to 2007! Lucy’s comics are a great example of how creative you can be with Hourly Comic Day. (And how on earth did she do it with a small child??)

Part 2/3 of my 2022 HCD

I’ve taken part since 2021, but this year I am extra excited because Hourly Comic Day 2025 is on a Saturday!

After three years of HCD on workdays, I’m looking forward to the freedom of doing anything I want this 1st Feb (as long as I spend several hours of the day scribbling down the things that are happening!).

I can’t wait to see what everyone else gets up to, and what they share. Will you join me for Hourly Comic Day 2025?¹

The final part! I still like this comic, although now I’d use a bolder line and more contrast.

I’ve included the three pages of my 2022 Hourly Comic Day because I think it’s my most successful illustration. It’s not an extraordinary day in my life - that’s not the point - but it has small memories of that moment in time.

In 2022 I was convinced I would always eat a plant-based diet, which you can see in the meals². I’ve since slipped, but looking at this comic I wonder if that tzatziki really could have been vegan >.>

Another memory: in the final panel you can see me “resenting the construction site opposite the flat”. I worked from home during those long months of construction, and I’ve since forgotten the annoyance. Well, I would have forgotten, but thanks to this comic my frustration and bitterness is immortalised forever!

2. My dinner that day was an Ethiopian lentil dish (misir wot) which I absolutely bungled T_T (though I didn’t admit it in my comic). I can’t remember what went wrong, but I will have a reminder of that failed meal forever :DD
